BestRest's Great Continental Divide Ride 2008 : In July '08 Steve Irby and I rode north the along the Continental Divide, from Mexico to Canada. This 2,800 mile off-road adventure took us through remote country that few people ever see. These snapshots were taken along the trail, often while riding holding the camera in one hand, and the handlebars in the other. The photos are more-or-less in chronological order.

The journey took 13 days, which includes 1-1/2 days to drive the truck to Tucson. So why did we haul the bikes down to Arizona? We wanted to arrive the bikes (and us) in good condition. A freeway ride from Seattle to Tucson would've worn out the knobby tires, and would've required servicing the bikes before we began riding. So the logical choice was to truck the bikes to Arizona, and ride north.

We followed a GPS course set out by another BMW rider, who was himself following a course laid out by adventure bicyclists. The roads and trails were passable on 2 wheels, but primitive in many places. Weather played a part in the journey - the monsoons and flash floods of New Mexico prevented us from riding one remote section of the trail. Wisdom prevailed and we took an alternate route around the worst of the weather and mud. It's a good thing we did, because the region we avoided was hit by torrential rains.

F800GS LightBar : The F800GS LightBar allows you to mount a variety of auxiliary lights. The round flanges of the LightBar can be positioned above or below the bar. The preferred method of mounting lights is with the stud to the side, but if you use the included Extenders you can mount lights with the stud pointing upward or downward.

We recommend limiting the size of your lights to about 4" diameter. IPF S6313, S6314, and Rev1 systems fit nicely. Piaa lights will also work, just keep the size and weight to a minimum.

Puck-Up : When we finally got our BMW F800GS, the first thing we noticed was the poor design of the sidestand. The puck at the end of the tubular stand was so small it would instantly dig into soft ground or tarmac. The lean angle of the bike on the sidestand was alarming 20 degrees. It wouldn't take much for the bike to fall over on its side.

It was clear that something needed to be done. The puck needed to be larger, and the sidestand needed to be longer so the bike wouldn't lean so far.

Our solution was the "Puck-UP. It's a combination oversized sidestand puck AND it's adjustable in height so you can change the lean angle of the bike. Hence the name, Puck-UP.

The Puck-UP comes with a series of nylon spacers that you can insert between the intermediate puck and the ground puck. You can mix-and-match the bushings to achieve different lean angles, and to accomodate different preload settings or cargo loadings.

These photos show the stock sidestand configuration, and an F800GS equipped with a Puck-UP. If you look at the differences between the two photos, the Puck-UP reduced the lean angle of the stock sidestand from an alarming 20 degrees to about 11 degrees. No fear of tipping over with the Puck-UP.

BMW F800GS : After an 11-month wait, we FINALLY received our BMW F800GS. Imagine our excitement at getting the newest, latest, and greatest motorcycle from BMW.

A few minutes after signing the papers, I rolled the F800 out to the waiting trailer to haul it back to the shop. A few seconds after that, the bike was on its side. OH NO!

No worries, it was intentional, part of a ritual I go through whenever I get a new bike. In the safety, comfort and convenience of the dealer's parking lot, I intentionally lay the bike on its side. Once that first tumble is out of the way the rest will be easier. Eventually I'll drop it somewhere along the trail, so why not do it on my own terms? No harm done, but the look on Wayne's face (South Sound BMW) was worth a million bucks!

R12GS Super Pillion Plate : BMW R1200GS Super Pillion Plate - For solo riders only, it replaces the stock luggage rack and provides a solid cargo platform for all your gear, fuel cells, Pelican case, or other items you want to mount behind the rider. It also provides a mounting platform for any of our BestRest BackRests.

The SPP is crafted from laser cut and precision formed aircraft aluminum. Mounting brackets are steel and they attach to the frame. At the front you will use your stock seat latch to lock the plate in place. Tie-down slots along the edges provide plenty of points for strapping your load securely.

Prototype unit shown has an aluminum powerdercoat finish. Production models may be black, we haven't decided yet.

Installation takes about 30 minutes. Swapping from the Super Pillion Plate to a stock configuration with the BMW luggage rack and passenger seat only takes about 10 minutes.

Works with BMW System Cases, Jesse Luggage Systems, and Touratech panniers.

GoPro Hero 3 Camera : The GoPro Digital Hero 3 is a waterproof three megapixel wrist camera. For motorcyclists that means you can still ride in the rain and take photos or videos without damaging an expensive camera.

The Hero 3 takes high resolution 2048 x 1536 photos using an f2.8 lens. Automatic metering compensates for most lighting conditions.

You can strap it on your wrist so it's always at your fingertips. Or you can strap it to the bike and record yourself in the saddle as you ride your favorite roads or trails. With a little imagination you can attach it to your handlebar, footpeg, crash bar, saddlebag, etc. You could even Velcro it to your helmet for a bird's eye view of the instruments and roadway.

Now you can take your own videos while you ride.

The silver lightweight high impact resin housing contains a powerful max white 55W H3 bulb that performs in the 110W class. The multi-reflector lens provides a driving/flood pattern, perfect for night time driving or daytime conspicuity.

The best feature of this system is the WIRELESS REMOTE SWITCH. It measures only .5" x 1.25" x 2" and can be mounted anywhere with velcro or double stick tape. You can put it in your tankbag, on your handlebars, or anywhere else that's convenient.

REV1 lights mount to any flat surface that measures 2"x2", using high performance double-stick tape (included). They can be aimed vertically and locked in place with two simple set screws.

REV1 light systems come with two lamp assemblies, the wireless remote switch, relay and wiring harness. Price is $180

We thought that horizontal adjustment was important for motorcycle applications so we designed a simple but effective stainless steel bracket that allows the REV1 lights to be adjusted vertically, as well as swivel to the left and right. You'll be able to aim them exactly where you need your pattern to fall. The brackets can be mounted to any flat surface and most lightbars, using a 6mm machine screw. Our REV1 brackets are an addtional $20 per set.

North To Alaska 2007 : This gallery captures the tale of two friends looking for a bit of motorcycling adventure. The participants were Mark Bryan from Bozeman, MT, and David Petersen from Seattle WA (also of BestRest Products fame). We rode our BMW motorcycles northward past the Arctic Circle, to Deadhorse, Alaska and Prudhoe Bay. Our journey was marked by challenges that made for lasting memories. Mark rode an R1150GS, I rode an R1200GS.

We joined up in Salmon Arm, BC, at the home of David's in-laws. There we did some last minute organization before we saddled up for the long ride. We'd charted a course that took us in a circular route thru British Columbia, the Yukon, Alaska, back to the Yukon, Alberta, and finally back to Salmon Arm. When we finished we'd covered over 7,000 miles in 14 days (June 24 - July 7). All but one day was spent riding; we allowed ourselves one day of rest in Fairbanks, after our marathon ride from Coldfoot to to Deadhorse (and back).

I've inserted a map showing the course we followed each day. The photos are in chronological order for each day. Here's a helpful hint - when riding with a friend(s), make sure you synchronize your camera's internal clock with your buddy's camera. This makes it much easier to combine photos later on.

We used Garmin 276 GPS's to help with the navigation chores. Although you don't need a GPS for this journey (there's not many choices for highways up North), we found the GPS a helpful tool to keep track of our mileage and our progress from one check point to another. The GPS also helped us manage our fuel stops. Fuel management is a big deal because it's a long way between fuel stations, and not every spot on the map offers gasoline. Rule of thumb: If you see a gas station, fill the tank.

One thing that BC, Yukon, and Alaska have in common - it's BIG COUNTRY. The towns are hundreds of miles apart, and there's not much in between. In some places you can ride for nearly an hour and never see another soul. In other places there's heavy traffic (motor homes) that slows you down. But most of the time traffic is light and you can make good time on 2 wheels.

We were prepared to camp along the way, so we were fully equipped with tents, bags, stoves, etc. But because we were on such a tight schedule to complete the ride in 2 weeks, we'd set mileage goals from 500 - 800 miles each day. That didn't leave much time for camping, so we looked for motels each night. We were fortunate to find them during the busy summer season. We didn't reserve motels, preferring instead to leave things to chance because that way we could be flexible about our progress.

Rather than go into detail, I invite you to follow the photos as they take you on our journey. Some photos have captions, some don't. But you'll get the flavor, and perhaps you'll get the inspiration to ride to Alaska.

Magruder Corridor : The Magruder Corridor runs from Elk City, ID to Darby, MT. It's a road cut thru the mountains of central Idaho, sandwiched between two wilderness areas. For the most part the road is passable with a high clearance vehicle or a 4x4, but there's a few rough spots along the way. A high clearance rig is definitely advised. It's a perfect BMW GS ride, except when there's snow on the road (as I experienced). I rode this trail in September '06, during a brief "Indian Summer", when the temperatures were in the mid-60's. There'd already been snow at higher elevations but much of it had melted off, except for a few bad stretches. The photos where you see the snow are stretches of road where I had to get off the bike and push, pull, and/or otherwise manhandle the 700 lb. bike by myself. Knobbies would've helped, but for this trip the bike was wearing dual purpose Tourances. There were a few hunting camps along the lonely 75 mile stretch from the Red River Ranger Station to the Darby Ranger Station. The trail is very remote and uninhabited. If I'd had a mechanical problem or dropped the bike I'd have been in big trouble. Thanks to careful riding and God's grace I made it thru to the far side. This route is definitely NOT recommended in wet/snowy weather. Travel time is about 8 hours. Bring camping gear and plan to spend the night in some of the most beautiful country on the planet.

Metal Mule 45L Series 1 Panniers - Powder Coated : May 12 '09. Special price on one (1) set of MM panniers - $966.00. (regular price is $1620) Mounting frames are extra.

We've got one (1) set of Metal Mule 45-Liter, Series 1, powder coated panniers in stock. These are brand new, perfect condition. They'll fit any Metal Mule pannier frame. These have the "old style" Series 1 rubber sealing gasket. This system works great to keep out water and dirt - we know because we've ridden with Series 1 panniers to the Arctic Circle, and along the Continental Divide from Mexico to Canada.

Recently Metal Mule changed their sealing system, and their new Series 2 panniers use a molded urethane sealing gasket in the lid. Sure, it's an improvement, but it comes at a higher cost. With the new Series 2 system, all the old Series 1 bags became "obsolete". That's why we're selling the bags shown in these photos, at a greatly reduced price. Think of it this way - it's like buying a brand new 2006 motorcycle, in the year 2009. No, you won't get all the latest greatest improvements, but you will save $654.00

F800GS Tank Panniers fit Metal Mule Crash Bars : BestRest's F800GS tank panniers are designed to fit Metal Mule engine protection bars (also commonly called "crash bars").

These Cordura panniers slip over the top of the Metal Mule protection bars and fasten to the frame using nylon straps and buckles. The straps are extra long so you have options about how and where you attach the straps. We like coiling the straps around the bars a couple times, then around a frame member, then back to the buckle. This provides the greatest security. Fitment is quick and easy, removal takes seconds.

The bags close with a zipper which is covered and fully protected with a flap. Even if you forget to zip up the bag, the flap helps prevent the contents from jostling out of the bag on some bumpy trail.

Each pannier hold 4 liters. The tape measure shows actual dimensions, but we actually derived the practical volume by using dried beans. 4 liters of them.

So what can you carry in these panniers? On one side we carry our CyclePump, an EZAir Gauge, a Clear Shot lens cleaning kit, and other bits and pieces. On the opposite side we have room for a first aid kit, a BeadBrakR, an OilJug with fluids, some tire repair tools, or other necessities. Because these panniers are made from Cordura bag, don't put something in them that's sharp or would wear thru the fabric. Instead select items that are smooth, soft, and rounded.

There's space between the pannier and the exhaust port of the radiator, so air flow thru the radiator (and engine cooling) is not restricted.

BestHex Kit : Got a BMW F800GS? Ever try to work on the bike, using the tools that came with the bike? BMW used to provide a great set of tools, but lately they've been saving a few dollars - all you get these days is a screwdriver and a torx wrench. Bottom line - the toolkit doesn't give you what you need to perform the simplest tasks. You can't even remove the wheels to make roadside repairs or change rubber. We were frustrated - great bike, sucky tool kit. So we went out to collect the tools we'd need. We started with a Proxxon 23080 36-piece ratchet set, and supplemented that kit with a few box wrenches.

But we found we still needed some large 17mm 19mm and 24 mm wrenches remove the wheels. We considered carrying a big crescent wrench that would fit everything, or should we carry a 1/2" drive ratchet and the appropriate sockets?

Then it occured to us that we didn't need a wrench with a long handle, we already had 3 of those in our patented Tire Iron BeadBrakR kit. What if we could incorporate the tire irons into a series of wrenches? What if we could slip the tire irons into a special fitting, and use the leverage of the tire iron to turn the socket? What if we could design the wrenches so they nested together neatly, and what if we could include a 19mm hex bar that would fit in the front axle?

We went to the drawing board and what you see on these pages is the result of our efforts. The F800GS BestHex set contains a 17mm socket, a19mm socket, and a 19mm hex bar (all used for the front axle), and one 24mm socket for the rear axle. Fit the socket over the nut, slip the tire iron into the slots, and you'll have all the leverage you need to loosen or tighten those nuts and bolts.

The BestHex Kit fits in the palm of your hand. Nested dimensions are less than 1.25 x 2 x 2". Weight is only 4.8 ounces.

The BestHex Kit fits the tire irons sold by BestRest Products, the same ones found in the BestRest TireIron BeadBrakR, AND it also fits Aerostich's titanium Tar Arns. Tire irons sold separately.

BestRest's 2009 CDR - In Reverse : This is the 2nd time I've ridden the Continental Divide. In 2008 I rode south-to-north aboard a BMW R1200GS. This year I'm riding north-to-south aboard a BMW F800GS.

This first series of photos show how the bike was setup, all the bells and whistles, and all the small systems that add up to a trail-ready mount. Because I'll be riding the course solo, I've taken special precautions where necessary, and I'm carrying special tools and spares for critical parts.

CDR 2009 - June 14 - Defeated By Weather : Sunday June 14 - After spending the evening in Dillon (due to heavy rains in the Bannock area that made us think it was better to stay in a motel than a soggy tent), we rode south to Lima, then headed east toward Red Rock Lakes. The weather was cool and cloudy, with threats of more rain, but the direction we were headed seemed to be missing the worst of it.

Ten miles down the road we hit gumbo mud. Slicker than snot, difficult to stand up on 2 feet, let along on 2 wheels. The photos don't really do justice to the conditions.

Discretion was the better part of valor, so we manhandled the bikes so they pointed in the opposite direction, and headed back to Lima, then back to Dillon.

Having ridden this course the year before, I knew what conditions would be like between Lima and Ashton ID. Impassable, and dangerous. This ride is supposed to be fun, but the snow levels, road closures, and weather conditions made up my mind for me ... I was cancelling the rest of the trip and returning home. No sense tempting fate.

So I'm ending my June CDR ride, of my own choosing, instead of due to injury or accident which would've occurred had I tried to continue. Sure, I could've taken alternate highways and skirted the off-road sections, but then what would be the point? It's supposed to be an off-road adventure, not a road trip.

There's always next year, or later this summer. 8^)
